October 5, 2006 -- ALBANY, NY -- A dog died Wednesday after Albany police used a Taser on the animal.
It was the second time in two days that police have shot an aggressive dog with a Taser, which delivers electric shocks through two wires.
Police responded to a call at 11:16 a.m. Wednesday of a pit bull mix biting a woman on the arm in the 1600 block of Hill Street S.E. The bite didn’t break the woman’s skin because of her clothing.
The dog ran off when police arrived, but an officer later spotted the animal near the police department approaching another woman and dog. Officers shot the pit bull mix with a Taser, but it broke the wires and ran away.
Officers found the dog again near 27th Avenue and Thurston Street. According to police, the dog was growling at an officer and ran toward another officer, who then used his Taser on the animal.
Police used the Taser on 5-second cycles for about 30 seconds while waiting for a community service officer to arrive and take care of the dog.
When police stopped using the Taser, they saw the dog was dead. The community service officer attempted to revive the animal by doing heart compressions. Police didn’t know exactly why the dog died. They said officers have used Tasers for longer than 30 seconds on dogs without problems. No citations were issued to the dog owner. On Tuesday, police used a Taser on a pit bull that had reportedly attacked a woman and her dog. That pit bull was put down because of injuries caused by a neighbor hitting the dog with a bat while helping the woman.
