What have you tried already for your itchy dog? There is usually no cure for allergies or atopy, just control of symptoms. Allergies can be very frustrating. Probably best would be to have him allergy tested and start allergy injections. I will just list some common treatments: hypoallergenic food (Purina’s HA), Omega Fatty Acid supplement, Atopica, Antihistamine (Chlorpheniramine, Benedryl, or hydroxyzine), medicated shampoo, keep a good flea product on him like Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution, antibiotics for bacterial, fungal, or yeast infections if needed, and steroids to get him some relief if his skin is pretty bad. You also can do other testing such as checking for hypothyroidism, Cushing’s Disease, and biopsy of skin to make sure it is just allergy related. I am sure I am forgetting something. If you have tried all these, then you can ask for a referral to a Dermatologist. They may have some different ideas, but alot of it is just trial and error and seeing what your dog response to and what he does not.

Hope that was a little helpful.

Try feeding raw food. Look up BARF diets on the net.

Have you tried alternative methods such as essential oils or herbal remedies. Alot of these are both antihistamine/antiinflammatory and also calming to eliminate the hyperactivity associated with extreme itching. Let me know if I can be of help in alternative solutions.

We have a 10 yr old, 45 lb australian shepard mix who has been through allergy shots for about 4 years with no results but recently her/our vet put her on 100mg cyclosporine She showed a huge improvement in less than a month. She had chewed the fur off her feet for years and now she has fur on them again and she doesn’t smell bad anymore. She also takes 2 Benadryl tablets twice a day. The medicine costs us $96.00 a month but it is worth it. She’s a happy dog again!
