Lowchen with cut that won’t heal. Help!

Question: My 10 lb. Lowchen has a open wound on the top of her back from scratching. Do you have suggestions on what I can do to help it heal?

I cleaned it then put bacitracin on it but then I have to cover it because she keeps scratching. I would like to leave the wound open so air can get on it. I think it was from a flea bite. We live in Hawaii and this is the 1st time its happened and she is 1 yr old.

Thank You

Hello, I am a veterinary technician and I work emergency and critical care. Have you tried going to your local veterinary hospital? Sometimes wounds which are open require oral antibiotics along with topical medications. I would recommend warm compresses on the area 2-4 times daily. Prevent her from licking the area by placing a t-shirt on the area sometimes helps. The first step would be to go see your veterinarian. Good luck.

    I’ve never seen a Lowchen.
    What does your vet say?

I bought a Holistic dog care book and it said if I
took my dog to the vet, they would give my dog
a steroid shot…which would be bad for her. So I
was trying to do things a little different. So, I had
her cut to a puppy cut and finally found a cone to
put on her neck. That helped the wound dry up
and heal…although there’s a bald spot now. The
groomer advised to wash her with mild shampoo.
I went online and made a natural flea repellant.
I sprayed and then I vacumned my house very thoroughly but she is still getting fleas…so I guess
I just need to keep vacumning. The book also said
to put 1 tsp Apple cider vinegar in her water bowl
and to give her Brewers yeast/Garlic pills which I
bought at the pet store. I thought fighting the fleas from the inside out would be good too. Any other suggestions?
