Gemmotherapy would be an excellent option to consider. These help to drain the liver, kidneys and lungs. Holistic care requires picking those remedies best suited for a particular pet rather than a diagnosis so I cannot advise specific gemmos. A raw foods diet would be very important, too.

One alternative to pred therapy is to use inhaled medication (they use albuterol and an inhaled version of a steroid that is much safer and less likely to cause systemic side effects than oral prednisolone). There is a device called an aerocat that has a mask for a cat that attaches to the inhaler chamber. I know it is not alternative or holistic, but it is batter than oral pred for long term use.

Stay away from dairy products as they aggravate breathing problems. Make sure you are feeding an optimum diet. We like Innova Evo by Natura. Over time you may be able to decrease your pet’s need for prednisone.

I have a 12yr old cat that was on prednizone for 10years. If I had known that it would give her liver damage, I would never have put her on it. She had 2 asthma attacks, the first scared us to death, as she was breathing open mouthed! Vet treated with pred iv & albuterol breathing. She survived, the second, I pushed the prednizone & her theophylline and didn’t panic. She was fine at home! The long term pred. gave her a stomach ulcer and or irritable bowel, got her thru that. She is now on NO chemicals except 1/2 of theophylline a night. She’s had no attacks, whezzing or anything related to her asthma since last November! I’m now searching for holistic for the liver damage!
