How to control mild/moderate separation anxiety in a newly adopted 1 y/o lab mix?

Five days ago, I took home a lab mix which had been living with her three brothers for her entire life.  She seems to have a bit of trouble adjusting to no longer having them for security.  She does not like to be left alone and will follow me everywhere I go in the house; I believe she is attracted to the authority, security and companionship I provide.  She does not exhibit the behavior as strongly with the other members of the family. When gated in the kitchen at night, she howls and whines and causes a fuss.  I’ve tried not to appease her, but I’ve found myself sleeping on the couch in the adjacent room so that she could see me.  Last night, we let her roam both floors of the house at night, and she spent the majority of the time right alongside my bed.

She is very insecure and does not like to be pet by strangers, although she is not aggressive.  Is there any way I can boost her confidence and show her that people are good, and that being alone isn’t so bad?

The crate thing will work wonders. Just do not let her out when she makes noises. She must stay there the entire night, or if you are away from the house. Let her get used to this a little at a time while you are at home. The crate gives you more freedom to leave the house or if needed sometime overnight with a sitter. She needs to go to a basic obedience class where she will be around other dogs, and you will learn how to handle her competently. I am betting she will be fine like this.

    Goodluck 🙂
