How do i control my dogs anxiety in a car ride?

Since I got my dog from the pound around the day he was gonna be put down , he has high anxiety in car rides to unfamiliar places some people recommend liquid Benadryl to make him dopey. Is there any other way I can help him with his anxiety?

Thanks.

Your vet can give you a sedative if needed Brendan. What’s best is to start with short car rides that end in a fun place or with some kind of reward so that the dog starts to associate riding in the car with good things. Load your dog up, take him around the block, and give him a treat when you get home. Start extending the trips but always make the destination a fun place or some kind of reward/treat at the end so he starts looking forward to car rides. Good luck!
