I have a new dog & am currently using the flea control that goes between the shoulder blades. My vet said every other month, but it is not working.
I have used 2 times, 4 weeks in between.
It is now 2 weeks since last application. It seems very strong & I am concerned about toxic implications.
Is there anything else I can ask for from my vet or get from a local pet store that is holistic, organic, or not as strong?
Thanks,
Jane

Hi Jane,
There are things you can use to help your dog against fleas but none of them is as simple as the one-spot drops, so there is a trade-off. You are correct in having concern that the one-spots might cause short and long term problems. In some cases, they’ve caused severe problems and in other cases dogs and cats have not experienced anything adverse.
So it’s basically a gamble on whether your dog does well or could have problems. One important thing to do is to make sure you are not giving your pet too much by applying it too often.
Here at VetLocator our favorite product comes from the Cedarstore. It’s called Nature’s Defender for Dogs and it is a natural spray that you apply before you take your dog out. Takes just a second to do and fleas and other biting insects (and I use it myself to keep mosquitos away) stay away. The bosses like it so well they’ve devoted a few pages to it on our site.
And as for me…I do have to admit that I use a combo of one spot treatment maybe twice a year when fleas are at their worst and then the cedar spray the rest of the time. We don’t have any flea problems for out outside cats, ever and we live in an area where fleas can be a big problem.
You can get to the cedar page at http://www.vetlocator.com/pets. I just checked and that link works. Go to the cedar store products page, scroll down and look for the Nature’s Defender for dogs. It’s not super cheap, $30, but it lasts forever and is non-toxic.
Sincerely,
Taylor

Taylor,
Thanks so much.
I also have a cat with no problems, and my past dogs have not. This little guy has been a challenge on several levels!! (But I love him).
I will definitely check this product out, and maybe next spring we can handle it with only occasional spot treatment.
Jane
You are welcome Jane.
He’s lucky to have you as a ‘mom’.
Best wishes,

Dor flea & tick spray.
Fill ½ spray container(32oz) with warm water , add ½ cup alcohol , add ½ cup Skin So Soft(Avon) & 1 tablespoon Tea Tree Oil . Shake and fill to ¾ container with water. Daily Bush & Comb dog thoroughly. Shake container and lightly spray belly area , brushing in lightly afterwards.
Ive used this mixture for years but my dogs only go outside to do their business & play.
Thanks Ron. Do you apply this each time your dogs go out?
