Feline Leukemia

Yesterday one of my cats died of feline leukemia. Now that I know the signs I think my other 2 cats have the deadly disease. It is in the beginning stages for both of them, but so far they are only loosing their teeth. We have been buying them soft cat food to help them eat. Is it to late to save them? Will a vaccine still work for them?  Thanks.

Get them tested, and if they’re negative, then you can vaccinate them. Don’t get ahead of yourself. I wasn’t aware that losing teeth was a symptom of feline leukemia, and even among cats that live together the transmission rate is 10% in cats over one year.

Get their teeth taken care of, because bacteria from the mouth can spread throughout the body. Cats with feline leukemia are not well equipped to fight infections.

If they are positive, continue to feed canned, keep them indoors away from other cats, and bring them to the vet at any sign of a problem. Infections, etc., need to be treated very promptly in positive cats.
