Chihuahua with elevated ALT enzymes and high bile acids. Vet stumped. Alternative help?

My chihuahua has elevated ALT enzymes and high bile acids. There have been numerous tests, no answers, and now are referring me to the UofMN for more tests (she is 4 yrs old) presenting healthy except for these raised levels….I need some direction and suggestions on what to do next!

If possible, I want alternative care options.

Thank You

The elevated bile acids cause concern over possible liver failure. ALT increases may or may not be a big deal depending on the degree. I’m assuming AlkPhos and all other liver parameters are normal since they weren’t mentioned. Was a CBC also run? I’ve had hepatitis cases start like that, but usually show inflammation/infection on the CBC.

For multiple liver problems, I’ve used SAM-e and Vitamin E in conjunction for support of the liver with good results. You might ask your vet for a dosage based on your dog’s weight.

    Best of luck,

There would be concern of your pet having hepatitis with an elevated ALT and bile acids. Definitely go the UofMN for more tests as they will likely do an ultrasound and a liver biopsy for a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.
    Good luck.
