What to feed a dog prone to pancreatitis?

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

I adopted a 7 year old beagle mix about 3 weeks ago. I had to rush her to the vet the other day because she got very sick. Turns out she has pancreatitis. She’s doing somewhat better and I have her on a diet of rice, chicken, chicken broth and a little baby food.

When she gets better what should I feed her? Anyone have any experience with this?

Recall: Iams veterinary formula cat food recalled

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010
Proter and Gamble issued a voluntarily recall of two specific lots of a prescription-only renal cat food that is sold by veterinarians. The food could be tainted with salmonella.

Two lots of this prescription-only food have been recalled today.
The product is available by prescription from veterinarians. No illnesses have been reported, but an FDA analysis yielded a positive result on the lot codes listed above.

To find the lot code, look in the lower right corner on the back of the bag.

Consumers who have purchased dry cat food with these codes should discard it.
Pets with salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Is my dog getting enough water?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

My 5 year old french bulldog was diagnosed with attopic dermatitis at a young age.

At 2 he was diagnosed with IBD.

At 3 he was diagnosed with pancreatitis.

Many diets later, and many bouts later my vet thinks we can get it under control.

The current problem is, three weeks ago we started him on a low fat home cooked diet of boiled chicken breast and rice mixed with his Hills WD. He has not taken a drink of water out of his bowl since. After a couple of days, and out of fustrarion, I started to mix some of the broth with some water to try to get him to drink, and it worked. Now I can’t get him to drink plain water. I also soak the WD in water to make it easier to digest.

Could it be he’s getting to much water in his food so that he’s not thirsty? I’ve never in all my years being around dogs seen anything like this.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Seizures started after my dog received Lyme booster.

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I have a 21 month old female collie who started exhibiting neuro issues after receiving a Lyme booster in January. She is now having one petite mal seizure about every one to two months. Rather than conventional Rx with phenobarb or KBr, is there something natural that can be given? I would rather not have to watch her acquire new problems from side effects.

What is safe pain relief for very small dogs?

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

What is a safe pain relief for very small dogs?

My 2-year old (5lbs, 8oz) hurt her leg and began limping.  We took her to our Vet and received Metacam 0.5mg to give her once daily.

I stopped giving it to her because I read in the information sheet that came with the medication that it could cause seizures, liver disease and/or kidney disease.

Is there something I can give her for pain and inflammation that doesn’t have so many side affects?

Thanks for your help.

My dog does not have arthritis, but has trouble moving

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I have had arthritic tests for my dog which are negative, but every now and then he cannot seem to get up.  He cannot seem to move his body freely, and appears to be in pain.

What could this be? Should I get neurological tests??

Thank you

Dog covered with sores. Steroids not helping

Monday, June 15th, 2009

We have a 4 year old yellow Lab- On Sunday she started to develop red sores on her butt area, and by Tuesday the red sores had spread drastically – covering her belly , her legs, and certain points on her face.  I also noticed that her ears and face have become very swollen since Sunday.  She seems to be very, very  thirsty and depressed.

Since we took her to the vet on Wednesday and got her a steroid injection things have gotten more swollen on her face and now she has open sores on her face.  The vet also gave her a prescription for presidone(sp).

Any suggestions?  We have considered the possibility  of an allergic reaction but thought that her reaction may have been more immediate instead of progressively getting worse.

Homeopathic vaccinations for rabies that are recognized in Canada?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Are there homeopathic vaccinations for rabies so that I may take my cat to Canada that they will recognize as legal.

She’s been an indoor cat for 8 years. When I adopted her then she was given all her shots including rabies and she’s not been exposed to the outdoors since..

Healthy and homeopathic since then and I don’t want to give her shots if I don’t have to.

Dog diagnosed with sarcoma. Desparately seeking advice

Friday, June 5th, 2009

I have a 9 year old shepherd rottie mix who was just diagnosed with sarcoma.

They removed an 11 oz tumor from his right side and found gristle type material on the inside.  The concern now is osteosarcoma.  He will have x-ray on Monday.  The tumor was in a sheath.

I’m desperately seeking advice, suggestions etc. on diet, meds anything at this point.  I’ve had him from birth and am not ready to lose him.

Thanks for any help you can give!
