My 14 y/o cat won’t eat her special diet…help!

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

My 14 year old kitty has been diagnosed with early stage renal failure.

The vet has prescribed several foods, none of which she will eat. She did eat a couple for a few days, but after that said “no way”. I got tiredof starving my cat.

She has always preferred fish based foods. I have checked the ingredients on several and compared them to the ones suggested by the vet. It seems that the most important thing is to stay away from dry foods, which all have a high concentration of Crude Protein. I have found several Friskies Buffet Indoor Cat foods that she really likes. They are similar to the prescription foods in the percentage of crude protein, but are all lower on fat content.

Are the Friskies OK for her? Isn’t the moisture content and percentage of crude protein the most important ingredients?

Seeking internal medicine vet for cat with GI probs.

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Seeking an internal medicine vet for a cat with GI PROBLEMS (Gut Dysbiosis?),e.g., multiple large bowel movements,soft,progres- sing to loose stools and diarrhea.

Vet claims she cannot tolerate processed foood,e.g., canned cat foods. He recommends raw or cooked chicken for 3-4 weeks to rule out allergy. Difficult for me to manage. Have 4 cats.

Also giving her probiotic daily (2x, ideally).

I have IBS with diarrhea intermittently.  Am wondering if I am being contaminated by handling stools or if we both are being contaminated by raw meat (or cooked) left too long in refrigerator. Cannot afford vet visits. Have taken her to 2 other vets last yr. They did not address this issue or that of copious amounts of urine.  Blood sugar level sometimes somewhat elevated. Vet not concerned.  She was obese but has lost unexplained wt over several months.

Current wt is 12 lbs. 11 yrs. old. Tested positive for bartinella bacteria in Jan/Feb,2009. Giving doxycycline, 2nd round.

GI problems, wt loss, and copius urine present prior to Antibiotic. Inflammed gums for 10.5 yrs. 10-12 teeth lost. Have had cleaning 2-3 times.

Pls answer ASAP.

Polycystic kidney disease in a cat

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

My cat has polycystic kidney disease. She has started epogen as her
hemocrit was down to 22.

Her bun and creatine is 76 and 4.5. I give her subQ 100ml daily. I feed her
small bits of clean protein (cooked chicken, chicken livers etc, and a/d to
try to get her to eat. She is on Norvasc. She has also started pepcid. Her
stools are hard and pea-like.

I have read about various supplements to get her creatine and bun levels
down such as :

lactulose for CRF cats and Azodyl. I am trying to get her bun and creatine
numbers down. I can tell she feels bad and her appetite is much less. I feed
her throughout the day but she only eats a little bit each time.
