Dog x-ray shows chip off knee. Advice?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Our dog has had an x-ray and it shows a bone chip or some other object floating off of the knee.

Our vet said that an orthopedic vet would need to do surgery – the dog is 5 months old and the estimate (initial) was $2500.

Does this sound right and/or can non orthopedic vets perform this fix?

The dog is limping and often holding the leg (rear) up when walking/hopping.

Thank you.

18 y/o cat slight stroke. Don’t want to put down

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Two weeks ago my cat of 18 yrs suffered a slight stroke. She was down for two days and then came around and she is doing better.

Now I’m worried again. Her belly is swelling up and she does not seem in pain but she eats twice a day and drinks a lot of water and she voids a lot too.
Her bowels are moving as well. I don’t want to take her to our vet for fear he will say put her down. I can’t do that. I believe God gives life and he will take her when it’s time.

Can you suggest anything?

Cat with large growth on whisker pad. Help!

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

My daughter’s cat (about 13 years old) has developed a large growth on his whisker pad, most whiskers are gone along with fur in the area of the growth.  He is okay other than the growth, eats/drinks and does not seem to be in pain.  She took him to the vet and they said it is not an abscess and they want to do a biopsy ($600) to find out what it is and if it is cancerous.  Do you know what this could be?  If she does do the biopsy and it is cancerous she will not be able to afford radiation, do you feel a biopsy is necessary?  They said if it is a non-cancerous growth/tumor they could not remove it because it would remove part of his face, plus I am sure that procedure would be expensive as well.

Do you have an advice????

Lame beagle needs help.

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

My beagle has been lame in his back leg for over a month. X-Rays showed very little. It could be some arthritis is his knee.  He is 6 1/2 yrs. old.

Dermaxx did not work so we now have Rimadyl and it seems a little improved after one week but no where near what I think is better.

Is acupuncture something we should try next?

Thank you.

Persistent case of feline urinary tract infection. Help!

Monday, September 24th, 2007

My cat has a very persistent case of urinarey tract infection.

Been on two rounds of Baytril, 2 weeks each and last night she peed on my mattress again which tells me it is not completely cured or something else is happening.

We did an initial urine test and they did not find anything, but are culturing the urine for more possibilites.

I am really not wanting to do more antibiotics. Any suggestions?

Thank You

Young dog with Addison’s disease. Will treatments eventually harm him? Alternatives?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

At 1 year and 2 months my West Highland Terrier was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. He’s taking 1/2mg of prednisone every day and gets Percoten V shots every 28 days. My vet says that there are really no significant side effects of to these drugs. I guess my question is: My dog is fairly young and he’s going to be having treatment all his life. Is there a chance that the medications will eventually harm him, his kidneys, for example? Are there alternative treatments of Addison’s that do not require any of these drugs?

Thank You
