Chronic kidney failure in my 11 y/o beagle

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Chronic kidney failure in my 11 year old beagle. Have had her in the hospital twice to receive fluids, and am now having a vet tech over to the house daily to give her fluids.

She’s perky and happy and thus, our vet and we do not think it is her time to go, even though she does not like the hydration treatment.

My main confusion at this point, is her diet. I know that they said low protein is important, but more important is low phosphorus. She was eating a chicken and pasta canned food from a pet health food store, but is turning away from that. In desperation, I gave her a plain chicken breast which she gobbled up (am always worried that she is nauseous since that is when she stops eating and her BUN number rises).

So, is it o.k. for her to have chicken on a daily basis, or just be “strong” and leave the canned food down until she eats it? Have Pepcid from the vet and some other vitamin.

Any advice on any of these issues would be most appreciated because we adore our Jessica! Thanks much.

My vet won’t authorize meds without seeing my dog.

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Hello out there in blogland.

I just found out from my vet that I’ve had for 7 years and have always paid at the time of service, that my dog Izzy’s prescription for Novox (REALLY BAD HIPS. I was told this is a generic for Remadyl) could not be given an OK for unless she was seen by him.

I have been buying the drug online since it was so much cheaper.

I haven’t had to see the vet and he said by law he has to see a dog at least once a year to dispense meds.

Is this right?

I am currently unemployed and can barely pay my bills but don’t want Izzy to be in pain.

BTW, the vet also said she should have BOTH hips replaced at 5k each.

I am so depressed. Any suggestions out there?

Dog keeps going under the porch. Is this something to be concerned about?

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I am deployed and my wife keeps telling me on the phone that our mastiff keeps going under the porch. I want to tell her that she is just being weird but I don’t know.

Is this something to be alarmed about?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

My 7 month old lab puppy, Charley, has been diagnosed with severe hip diplasia. There seems to be so many surgical options…it has been less than a week since his diagnosis…

He is on Deramaxx for pain right now, but I am looking at all the options I can right now for the pain management and treatment of the dysplasia…

Corgi with sinusitis. Anyone have experience with natural remedies for this?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I have a corgi that has sinusitis. My current vet is treating with antibiotics.

Is there something more natural we can try to clear it up? I have heard of some products that are supposed to work but was wondering if you could tell me what things to use that are natural.

Thank you!

Dog not doing well after vaccines. Could they be causing problems?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Hello,

I have a part chihuahua about four months old. I’ve had him for about two months. He was extremely energetic and playful.

He had his first vaccines about a month back and in a couple of days became very lethargic, stopped eating and became very skinny. We rushed him to Banfield where they diagnosed him with extremely high liver enzyme (~1600). He was given broad spectrum antibiotic, vitamin and I/D food. He started improving and had a blood test few days back. The enzyme was still ~800 and so was told to continue with the old regimen.

The same day he had another vaccine. He has again become very lethargic and reduced eating.

Is it some side effect from the vaccine? At this point I’m not taking him back to my old vet and am looking for someone else.

Thank you.

Rescued Jack Russell with loose tooth. Need low-cost help.

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

We recently rescued a Jack Russell terrier and one of its front canine teeth are loose.

We have taken it to the local vet, and they are estimating over $300 to remove.

Does this seem like a fair price, or is there somewhere we can go that will charge us less since we rescued the animal?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

2 y/o adopted terrier mix. Chronic scratching help needed

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Terrier Mix recently adopted from shelter, 2 yrs old Chronic itching around mouth a eye area and biting leg as well at times.

What treatment is helpful for yeast infection?

Thanks

Marie

Hi Marie,
This is Taylor, Ask A Pet Pro’s blog administrator. Sorry to hear about your new one’s problems.

Have you had your pup checked by a vet yet for the cause of the itching? There can be several reasons for the itching, including a yeast infection, and one of those is caused by mites that create a condition called demodectic mange. Here is a picture of that:

I’d rule that out first as the treatment will differ from treatment for a yeast infection.

Here are some links for more information on demodectic mange:

Let’s see what advice our pro’s may have for you as regards to yeast.
