Emergency – dog is trying to throw up but nothing coming up

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

My six year old black lab suddenly woke up and is “trying” to vomit.

All that is coming up is bile. She acts like something is “stuck” or has a hairball. The heaving is very dry and the hacking is a dry almost scream.

She is healthy, ate a good supper at 6 pm, has access to plenty of water all day. Don’t know what to do for her. There is not an emergency after hours clinic near my home from what I can tell. Need some immediate feedback please. I am in Lake Wylie, SC just south of Charlotte, NC.

2 1/2 y/o Vizsla with a recurring skin rash

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Our 2-1/2 yr old Vizsla has developed a skin rash on her chest. It appeared two months ago and went away with a course of antibiotics, but now it’s back.

She eats Orijen, a high-quality fish kibble, but also gets occasional food treats. She swims often in an area of Lake Ontario that is probably filled with bacteria.

Is there a systematic way I can begin to treat her, before taking her to the vet?

Search for local house call vet for at-home euthanasia

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Hi,

I hope you can help me. My wonderful companion of the past 12 years is getting ready to leave me. She’s in increasing pain and the vet told me there is nothing more to be done for it. She has been failing pretty fast this past week and I want to have a local veterinarian on standby that can come out if I need it to put her to sleep at home.

These arrangements are so heartbreaking for me to make, but I want her to spend her last days surrounded by her loving family while she can still enjoy it, and then help her to go when the pain becomes unbearable for her.

I was not able to find someone local using your site. Can you help me?

I live in Santa Ana, California.

Our dog has bone cancer in his leg. Our vet wants to amputate.

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

OUR DOG HAS BONE CANCER IN THE LEG (SPINDLE CELL PROLIFERATION (CERTAIN) OSTEOSARCOMA (POSSIBLE).

OUR VET SAYS TO AMPUTATE THE LEG. HE IS A 90 LB DOG AND I’M NOT SURE IF HE WOULD BE ABLE TO WALK ON 3 THEN.

IT’S HIS BACK LEFT LEG.

I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IT IS VERY INVOLVED AFTER IT IS DONE, IS THAT TRUE?

THEN I WAS TOLD BY A FAMILY MEMBER TO GET HIM OFF CARBS. IS THAT TRUE?

I FOUND ON-LINE A NO CARB DOG FOOD, IS THAT CERTAIN?

ANYWAY, THEN I WAS TOLD ONLINE ABOUT RADIATION WOULD THAT WORK?

MY HUSBAND AND I ARE SO CONFUSED RIGHT NOW AND UPSET OVER ALL OF THIS. HE IS ON REMADYL TWICE A DAY AND THAT SEEMS TO HELP FOR NOW. IT HAS BEEN 3 MOS ALREADY.

EVERYONE I TALK TO SAYS IT WILL GET WORSE THE( PAIN) FOR HIM. RIGHT NOW IF YOU LOOK AT HIM HE ACTS FINE. HELP!!!!

EVERYTHING IS SO EXPENSIVE, OUR VET WONT TAKE PAYMENTS AND OTHERS WANT A CONSULTATION FEE.

IF THERE IS A GOD I WISH HE WOULD ANSWER US. IN MY HEART I FEEL THAT HE WILL BE OK BY WHAT WE ARE DOING FOR HIM NOW BUT THE BIOPSY AND X-RAYS SHOW DIFFERENT .

WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

Growing bleeding cyst on dog’s paw. Need advice.

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

I found a cyst between my 11 year old lab’s paw. It was growing and bleeding. The vet tried to remove it, but said that the roots went around tendons and arteries. He wasn’t sure if it was cancer or benign. He did not biopsy it. In either case, he recommended removing her toes or paw if it returns.

She has terrible arthritis and really needs both her front paws to walk.

What are the implications if I just leave this cyst/tumor alone?

Thank You,
Craig

Here’s some advice for taking your pet to the emergency vet

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Thank you for the information about emergency vet clinics (article on emergency clinic refusing to treat dying dog). I will be sure to call any clinic before I take my dog there for treatment, although I understand that is still not a guarantee they will be prepared to treat him.

I live in Wichita Kansas and we have an emergency clinic for animals here open in non-standard vet clinic hours. I have taken my dog there a few times and find they overcharge extremely even on something as simple as a can of dog food.

I have paid double the normal cost.

I have seen numerous arguments between clients and staff mostly dealing with charges. People are caught in a desperate situation when the pets they love need help. The clinic in Wichita takes advantage. The clinic operates as a specialty surgery clinic in the normal vet clinic hours. This also is a high charge service.

The clinic is owned by local vet clinics who have joined together to create the clinic.

Taking an oath to treat animals 24/7 in all conditions before issuing a vet license is a great idea. Also if a doctor and emergency staff are not present at a clinic, the clinic should not be able to advertise as providing emergency services 24/7.
