My dog has a fungus problem that just won’t go away

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

About three years ago my 2 year old King Charles Spaniel was diagnosed with fungus on his skin.  At the time my vet told me to bath him in betadine, leaving on his skin for 5 minutes before shampooing him off and that seemed to help for a little while. Next I tried an antifungal cream which also helped but smelled TERRIBLE.  I’ve taken him to a specialist who gave me some wipes and other medication for the condition, but nothing seems to get a good handle on this reoccurring problem.

I’m at my wits end.  Can you help???

Is my cat’s behaviour physical or behavioural? His life depends on your answer

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Okay kind of a long story- i have a two year  old neutered male cat. I have a male and female from the same litter and they have been inside since we got them at 6 weeks old.  He swllowed a piece of elastic and the vet at seal laird did surgery and removed it. It is a very sweet cat and he is very attached to me. He is a big boy at 17 lbs.  His problem is he runs through the house defecating . He will leave the litterbox from urinating and run full blast through the house pooping.  I have taken him to every vet within a 30 mile radius and they call it behavior problem. I can not put him outside because we have two labs and two outside cats.  The vets have tried prozac and prednizone and neither helped.   He is up to date on vaccines and they have done blood work and x rays.  I have 6 litter boxes in 4 rooms for two cats, with different kinds of litter and even newspaper.  He will whine when he  goes. I have tried the attract litter and I have had the floors professionally cleaned . My husband wants me to have the cat put to sleep as we can not even have people over because we are scared of what our cat will do.  i have approximatley a week to fix this or  that is what will happen.

If it is behavior , I can’t fix it. If it is some sort of physical issue, I want to help him.

Any questions-just let me know.

Thanks

I took my dog for a walk and her face swelled up when we got back

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

I have a small 18 month old female collie. Around 20 – 30 mins after taking her out on an overgrown track (grass, nettles etc) her face began to ripple and swelled to more than twice its size within seconds, in front of my eyes.  Her eyes were ‘Chinese’ looking and she basically looked like a Staff Bull Terrier. She did not seem distressed, was eating and drinking as normal and swallowing and barking OK.  The swelling has gone down quite a bit this morning and she is still eating OK.  She has been up this track many times, but not for a couple of weeks due to the overgrowth.  Could this be a bite or sting?

Am I a health nut because I insist on healthy food for my cats?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Hi,  I know you have a directory on VetLocator for holistic vets and I’ve used it twice, once for my dogs and then a cat specialist.  So I have a question…

My friends call me a health nut because I’m super concerned about my pet’s nutrition. I just keep reading about recalls and such from ‘healthy pet food’ companies and it’s freaking me out a little.

How can I make sure I’m feeding them right?

7y/o Eskimo with mysterious seizures. Need help!

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

My American Eskimo, male, neutured, will be 7 yrs. old at the end of this month.
He has had no health issues in the past, other than Lymes (??-spelling) disease,
for which he was treated with Deoxyclycline (??-spelling).
He had 2 episodes (did not appear to be full seizures), approximately 1 month apart in May & June, 2010. He had blood work done after each occurrence.
His blood work was all negative.
I took him to the University of Pennsylvania, College of Veterinary Medicine: 7/2/2010, at which time he had an actual seizure (during the evaluation) that had to be controlled with an injection of valium. He was an inpatient for 2 days.
He had an MRI/brain, which was negative, and a spinal tap that was essentially negative.
I was advised that normal proteins levels are 25. He was 31, however, I was told that this was not abnormal for a dog that had just had a seizure.
He was started on Phenobarbitol (.5 grains twice a day: am/pm).
He started the medication on Tuesday and is very lethargic. He is normally like a
firecracker. I am afraid that the dosage is too much for him.
I am looking for someone more local to monitor his case. I reside in North Brunswick,
NJ.
The drive to Philadelphia is approx. 1.5 hours.
He is my heart, and I am looking to do what is best for him.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

My fat cat is on a diet but is still not losing. Help!

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

My 7 year old spayed female cat is huge. We put her on a special diet but she’s only lost half a pound so far and still has five more to go. Despite carefully watching what she eats, she’s not really losing.

Do you have any tips or suggestions for us?  We’re at our wits end!

Sincerely,
DL

My dog has a growth on her right leg

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Hi,

I have a 12 year old pug and I’d like your opinion about a growth  the inside of his right front leg.

We took him to our vet who told us it was a fatty tissue that hangs down about two inches.

My dog has had it for about a year and it doesn’t seem to bother him.  Our vet said it was benign and we could just let it alone as it is not a health problem.

Is he correct?

Cat with chronic constipation. What can we do?

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Our cat has had chronic constipation with very hard and dry feces. Our vet gave us stool softeners that work most of the time, but even then the cat still has ‘episodes’.

Do you have any clue why this might be happening even with stool softeners?

Is there anything else that we can give him to make him regular and prevent this from happening?
