Older cat with bowel problems. Want to extend his life.

We adopted our cat Max from the animal shelter 8 years ago and they thought he was between 6-8 years old at the time.

His stools were always hard and we would give him laxatone with his meals per the advice of the vet.

About a month ago he started throwing up and his poops stopped, and he has been deobstipated twice since then.  We don’t feel surgery is the answer for him based on his age and the recovery process so he will be going in just one more time for deobstipation.

We were thinking if we put him solely on a liquid diet (any suggestions for this type of diet) and treated him with herbs perhaps he could recover.

My question: How long can a cat survive a liquid diet? right now he is on cisapride and lactolose, but only drips a pasty black liquid.

It’s very sad to think that he will not be able to recover from this problem.  Are there any recommendations for him?

Thank You

  1. Yes, very sad…it depends on how long the colon has been stretched. Acupuncture, especially e-stim (electroacupuncture) can be very helpful, with the herbs and diet modification, soluble fibers, milk, sesame seeds, green supplements, and making sure hydration is adequate are all options that may help.
