In some areas leptospirosis can be endemic or areas can have periodic outbreaks with both animal and human patients severely ill. The local veterinarian should carefully assess risk and advise individual patients. In the early 1970’s Columbus , Ohio had a no vaccinate policy via The Ohio State University and had 38 active cases some fatal and 2 Vet students in the hospital at the veterinary school. I saw 3 cases in puppies in Columbus last year. It is a very sporadic and strange disease.

The new 4 way sub-unit vaccines are very safe and effective. In our area we see lepto and have seen it kill dogs and infect people. We recommend it to all clients and I give it to my own dogs. We certainly see more lepto than distemper. Many people aren’t aware how safe the new vaccine is having a reaction rate similar to parvo vaccine and how devistating the disease can be.
I agree with Dr. Walls. We vaccinate all the dogs at our clinic due to seeing the devastation of this disease to the kidneys and liver. It is also a zoonosis and families that have been exposed are at risk. In our litigious society I would not want to risk allowing a patient I saw to expose a person due to my failure to vaccinate for a potentially fatal disease. It is endemic in Georgia and the University of Georgia was doing titers on all patients with kidney failure as they were admitted to eliminate this disease as a consideration. I use the 4-way and have seen very few reactions as compared to the previous vaccines. I have not seen distemper in 5 years yet I use this vaccine, as compared to treating 2 cases of Lepto in unvaccinated dogs in the last year and hope through vaccination to never to see another Lepto case.
Excellent article and follow up comments. I found this information helpful.
