Cat with chronic constipation. What can we do?

Our cat has had chronic constipation with very hard and dry feces. Our vet gave us stool softeners that work most of the time, but even then the cat still has ‘episodes’.

Do you have any clue why this might be happening even with stool softeners?

Is there anything else that we can give him to make him regular and prevent this from happening?

My oldest cat was diagiosed w/mega colon syndrome. A few years ago a couple of different vets were pushing me to have most of his colon removed, BUT, thats a hard decision to make. I said no. It was really hard having to give him enemas and he also was on a stool softner. What I did was really up the amt of lactolose giving him and soon he was going without the screaming and straining. This was at least 3 yrs ago and when I forget to give him the right amt of stool softner he starts to strain again and act real uncomfortable. So I up the lactolose and he’s pooping just fine.

Maybe try upping the dose of the stool softner-if u give him too much it can’t hurt him. Hey- it worked for my guy after yrs of him being blocked up and passing stool that were like cement.

    Good luck!

I have a cat that used to have really bad constipation. I no longer feed my cats dry cat food. In the wild they do not eat cereals. They only eat meat – mice, birds, etc. and get most of their water from this food. I only feed my cats canned cat food now. Dry cat food is not good for cats. They do not need the fiber that is in dry cat foods – fiber causes urinary tract infections in cats.
    Hope this may help you.

You should be very happy with your blog. While I may not agree with every point you make it does create the need for some thought on one’s perspective. Good show.
