I have a 11 year old dachshund mix and he has a few problems.
He has a growth on his belly and I was told by a vet 2 years ago since he has a heart murmur that he may die during surgery. Also he has lost almost all his hair on his lower back and back legs, he doesn’t have fleas as we use Frontline plus monthly.
Can he just have an allergy or something else?
Please help! My finances are so strapped and I want to make my kiddos happy and healthy.

Hi Jessice,
Without having a vet look him over its hard to say. It could be a flea allergy and – as you probably read on our blog – all that needs to happen for the allergic reaction to kick in is one bite from a flea. Sometimes pets can build up a resistance to Frontline and other one-spots and these can actually cause health problems in some pets. Unless he’s around fleas (goes outside or comes in contact with fleas from other pets), he may not need to have Frontline applied so frequently – again, check with your vet for their views on our suggestion. The point on flea allergies is to keep your home and yard flea free and keep fleas far away from your dog.
You can also see if a change of diet will help with possible allergies by switching his food to one that is formulated for pets with allergies. Usually these have duck or rabbit or some other not usual meat as their base so your dog has not built up an allergic reaction yet. It’s certainly worth a try to see if this helps him and, although these are not inexpensive foods, they are less than expensive medications and if they help, wonderful! If not, you have still bettered your pup’s diet and that’s not a bad thing at all.
Our best wishes for a quick solution and a long and healthier life for your dog.
