  1. Hi Adele,

Scabies mites, also known as mange, is common, very contagious to other animals and (also humans can get them – but not as easily as other animals).

Your vet can treat your dog for this, of course, and there are other things that you can do at home that can help. The most common are dips and medicated shampoos that you use to penetrate the rough, thick layer of your dogs skin to get to those bugs and kill them. This is the most common and frequently needs to be repeated to get them all.

You can also get an oral treatment – there are a few – but for those, make sure you are working with your vet before you give them. Some oral or injected treatments are dangerous for certain kinds of dogs.

We have something that we’ve used successfully on a personal level – Cedar based products from the Cedar Oil Store.

Scroll down to Natures Defender for Dogs to order. It lasts for a long time and takes care of mites, fleas and ticks. For mites you need to make sure your dog’s skin is saturated with the product so you might want to get a couple of bottles because you’ll want to make sure there is enough to kill those bad bugs. It’s natural and does not harm your dog and their hair grows back beautifully. We’ve used it personally with good success and I’ve also seen pictures of an almost hairless old dog with horrible mange that grew back an amazing coat after repeated dips in the cedar product.

    Sincerely,
    Adam

Adele, this is one of the very few things we recommend and sell on our site because it does many good things and is not harmful to pets.

Scabies can lead to a secondary infection if it is not treated properly. `
