Chronic kidney failure in my 11 year old beagle. Have had her in the hospital twice to receive fluids, and am now having a vet tech over to the house daily to give her fluids.
She’s perky and happy and thus, our vet and we do not think it is her time to go, even though she does not like the hydration treatment.
My main confusion at this point, is her diet. I know that they said low protein is important, but more important is low phosphorus. She was eating a chicken and pasta canned food from a pet health food store, but is turning away from that. In desperation, I gave her a plain chicken breast which she gobbled up (am always worried that she is nauseous since that is when she stops eating and her BUN number rises).
So, is it o.k. for her to have chicken on a daily basis, or just be “strong” and leave the canned food down until she eats it? Have Pepcid from the vet and some other vitamin.
Any advice on any of these issues would be most appreciated because we adore our Jessica! Thanks much.

Hello Joy,
You ask some good questions. Let’s see if any of our pros have advice for you.

PS – what does her vet say about this (since that’s the person most familiar with her condition).
Well, he says that, of course, chicken has more protein than the K/D canned dog food, BUT he feels it is more important for her to eat.
“Quality of life” seems to be the phrase that is used most often by all of us these days and if I didn’t know about the kidney failure, I wouldn’t really know that anything was wrong with her. Thanks for the reply!

heres the rub. the commercial diets are low quantity, but low quality protein. in my opinion, low quality creates more waste. thus more work on the kidney.
we go to raw diets. high quality protein, such as real chicken. this creates less waste.
will it raise the BUN and Creatinine SOME? yes. SOME! does this mean the dog is dying………….no.
homeopathic remedies such as solidago and chinese herbs such as rhemania are great glandular therapy as well.
so……..in my opinion, feed fresh chicken, fresh veges. no commercial food.
and NO vaccines!!!!!
