Helping pet owners get health help For their pets

My vet won’t authorize meds without seeing my dog.

Hello out there in blogland.

I just found out from my vet that I’ve had for 7 years and have always paid at the time of service, that my dog Izzy’s prescription for Novox (REALLY BAD HIPS. I was told this is a generic for Remadyl) could not be given an OK for unless she was seen by him.

I have been buying the drug online since it was so much cheaper.

I haven’t had to see the vet and he said by law he has to see a dog at least once a year to dispense meds.

Is this right?

I am currently unemployed and can barely pay my bills but don’t want Izzy to be in pain.

BTW, the vet also said she should have BOTH hips replaced at 5k each.

I am so depressed. Any suggestions out there?

    Hi Anne,

While we are not vets or attorneys I believe your vet is correct and could get into big trouble if he/she wrote a prescription without seeing your dog periodically.

Here is an online reference from the AVMA that might be helpful to you on the subject. http://www.avma.org/issues/prescribing/prescribing_faq.asp

I’m so sorry to hear about Izzy’s hips and the pain. Hopefully your vet can work something out so that everyone is happy.

My dog had similar problem, but she responded very well to over the counter aspirin and fish oils. As for the operation, I think it’s a scam and rediculous. Look into holistic remedies. They usually work.

    1. Most states require their vets to see a pet before prescribing a drug. If you need a prescription to buy the product, you need to have an ongoing relationship with a vet.

    2. All human doctors require at least annual visits before authorizing refills, even on clearly ongoing problems like Asthma and inhaler medications. Your Vet is under the same ethical obligation.

    3. Drugs like Rimadyl adversely affect the liver of dogs. Your dog should be tested every six months for liver function changes. Tossing drugs at a condition for long periods of time is potentially dangerous and should never be undertaken without on-going medical monitoring.

    4. Try a Holistic Vet. Acupuncture may help. Check for a certified Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine veterinary professional. http://www.TCVM.com
