When my dog is outside in the rear of the home, we notice lately lots of flies congregate on the top of his rear end near the tail. Is there a spray that is safe for this problem? He just had a bath and he is still a target for the flies. Thanks for a quick answer.

Dear Adele,
Flies that congregate around your dog’s rear end and tail are there because something is attracting them. Because of the area, it is either a skin condition at the base of his tail (a favorite place for fleas to collect), his anal sacs could be full (rear-end under his tail) and need to be expressed or a messy butt that needs better cleaning.
Flies are attracted to things by the scent. Some scent your dog is emitting is what’s causing the problem.
The first thing is to try and identify what’s attracting the flies and fix that.
There’s a product we recommend to keep all sorts of bugs away – it’s from the Cedar Oil Store and is made from cedar oil. It’s a pump spray that keeps flies, mosquitoes, fleas and ticks and other bugs away. I use it personally to keep from being eaten alive by the mosquitoes here in Florida. It’s natural and non-toxic and works great! You can get the small spray size for about $11 + shipping and it lasts forever. Here is a link to that: http://www.cedaroilstore.com/product_p/4001.htm&Click=444
Let’s see if anyone else has some other ideas for you.

Thanks for your reply – my dog had his anal sacs removed about 5 years ago as they were filling up constantly, but the spray you recommend sounds good – I’ll try it.
my bulldog Mazy has been having tail issues she has a screw tail which I try to keep clean. I use a yeast medicine as well as antibiotic cream regularly. but today I clean it out and I found a tiny bug. it was head of pin sized but i looked at it with my Diamond loop. the bug had a tail that looked like a curly piece of hair and i could see it was moving help! what the hell could it be and how can i get rid of them.. she has been acting like she gets little bites and jumps up looking around at her tail.
