My 8 year old female spayed beagle has an abnormally enlarged belly constantly. It’s very firm and not blubbery like with fat. It doesn’t come and go. According to the scales, she is overweight, but in looking at her only her belly is large. Her head, legs, arms, shoulders all look normal.
The reason I took her to the vet was because all of the sudden she stopped wanting to play with her frisbee, meaning I throw it, she runs and gets it, and brings it back. She literally would not do it and that’s been at least 8-10 months ago. This was something we did every single day for years. I took her to the vet and they did routine blood work. They found that her neutrophil were very abnormally high and her lymphocytes were low. I don’t remember what the numbers were exactly, but it was like if normal neutrophil counts are 5, then her’s was like 10,000. That huge of a difference, anyway. The vet thought possibly Cushing’s Disease. They did the test and it came back negative. Now we’re stumped.
We started her on a special diet of MD dog food (sorry can’t remember the name), made especially for her liver, if I remember right. She has been on this now for over a month and I can’t tell any difference at all. We walk 2 miles every day and she is pretty much just as energetic as usual, although a little slower. She doesn’t seem to be in pain, short of breath or otherwise uncomfortable.
My question is do you have any ideas of what else could be wrong with her? Or what other tests can be done?
Her only other symptoms of anything I can notice are a noticeably thinning of her hair around her highquarters, multiple lipomas all over her body, and the fact that she looks like she is aging quickly.
I really appreciate your help!
