White Corgi whose paws turn pink

I have a 10-year-old Corgi who has been in pretty good health his whole life. But sometimes some of the white fur on his front paws turns a pinkish hue and he begins to lick them quite a bit. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? We live in Wisconsin – might the cold weather have something to do with it?

Thanks!

This dog very likely is demonstrating “Saliva Stain” that is causing the light colored hair to be stained due to licking. Your dog needs examination with Atopy in mind. Some type of contact, inhaled, or injected allergen may be causing this type of allergic dermatitis. There are medications specifically for this problem Atopica, but a good work up and diagnosis must be done first.

    Hi,

Yes, weather may be a contributor. I would make notes as to when and what season this happens. For relief, you could buy some calendula cream at your nearest heath food store.

This happened with my Carin Terrier and it turned out to be a wheat allergy. I have removed all gluten from his diet and he no longer licks or bites his paw pads. He doesn’t even need anti-histamines anymore!

He was eating Nutro Natural Choice venison and brown rice formula, but it is hard to find so we are switching him to Nature’s Recipe Venison & Rice.
