13 y/o Chow/Golden with seizures

My 13 year old female Chow/Golden mix has begun to have seizures the past few days. She’s been given valium but still has them at night while sleeping. I’d taken her in for blood in her urine last week and they gave her cipro and two days later she started seizing. Her urine has cleared, and I don’t want to give her any other drugs if possible. Any other suggestions?

Thank You

  1. Daniel Koller, DVM - Portland, OR says:

First and foremost: has the vet done any blood work; urinalysis; radiographs etc. to eliminate the cause of the blood in the urine? Secondly; Valium is a short acting and short term drug used in seizure control in dogs and cats. The drug of choice for long term control of epileptiform seizures in dogs is Phenobarbital.

Finally; when your dog was off the antibiotic did the seizures stop?
