Tabby with large area under leg missing hair. Skin is red and raw. Help!

Lucille my 13 year old Tabby has suddenly a large area under her front right leg and the area is missing all its hair and is red red raw skin. She is an indoor cat so I don’t know what caused it. What should I do? I put a bit of Neosporin on it but she is not human. I first noticed this two days ago.

Help!

Thanks

Take your pet to your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. If you do not have a veterinarian, now is the time to build a relationship with one so that you can learn about the importance of routine veterinary care for your pet and health maintenance.

Is it possible she has been exposed to fleas? It is not a common presentation (usually seen on the back), but it can cause an itchy area that, if she is licking, can become raw. Another problem can be an allergic condition called eosinophilic granulomas- they produce red itchy areas also, that can be raw, too. She may have had a bite from a spider or other insect, or from another cat. Your best option is to take her to your vet for an exam. I have used a topical powder called Neopredef that works well on moist lesions (it sticks well). It has an antibiotic and a steroid to control the itching. She may need an oral antibiotic too. If you don’t see improvement, she may need more tests to find a cause. Neosporin is a triple antibiotic ointment, and vets do use them, but ours are made so that if your cats licks them there are fewer problems.
Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.
