4 yr old female Lab, allergic and unhappy

Pet Owner Question: I have a great female lab mix. She is 4 years old, and the most fearful, anxious and unhappy friend I have ever had. She is allergic to environmental stuff and is on antigens and low dose steroids. I recently saw on TV that she can have acupuncture treatment for some of these problems. Can you help us?? Labs done last week are all normal except for a very slightly elevated Alk. Phos.

Thank you, BVB

    “Hi,

I have a few dog patients with allergies. I have found that acupuncture can help, however you are wasting your time if you do not change her diet. Also herbs and or homeopathic remedies will be needed to boost the dog’s immune system.

A remedy called Bach Flower Rescue Remedy will help with the fear and unhappiness. It is amazing how effective it is. I use it on all my dog patients. You can find it at most natural grocers or online. Add it to her water. You can also rub a small amount on your palms and then massage her ears. It will not interfere with any medication.

I highly recommend you read ” The Nature of Animal Healing” by Martin Goldstein, DVM. You will find very useful info on diet and supplements to help with the allergies. I think his book is one of the best sources for this information.

    Hope this helped.
    Keep me posted,”

In my 36 years as a DVM I have come to believe that most Labs with allergies actually have food allergies, of which there is no good test, only food trial. Often wheat, corn or preservatives are involved. Usually they have chronic ear infections (not from getting in the water as many think, but from allergies). They must be put on a strict hypoallergenic diet, or a diet with a new Protein and a new carbohydrate (such as fish and potato, for example). During their 12 WEEK trial, they cannot be given treats, a piece of toast, or anything other than the trial diet!!! I have seen miraculous cures for the very diligent owner. I would even avoid chewable heartworm preventive medications during this time. Good Luck. Mack L. Barney, DVM
